Manchester United have joined Arsenal in the race to sign Fernando Muslera after identifying the Galatasaray goalkeeper as a possible replacement for David de Gea at Old Trafford.

With the Spain international set to swap the Theatre of Dreams for Real Madrid this summer, Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal is already planning for life after his current No.1 and is ready to rival the Gunners for the 28-year-old's signature.

TalkSPORT cites reports in Turkey which suggest the Premier League giants are preparing to make a formal offer for Muslera as soon as De Gea's prospective transfer to the Santiago Bernabeu is confirmed.

However, they could face competition from the Gunners as Arsene Wenger has been keeping tabs on the Uruguay international's progress at the Turk Telekom Arena too.

The French tactician remains unconvinced that David Ospina is the answer to a long-standing problem between the sticks at the Emirates Stadium, while Wojciech Szczesny's future has been the subject of frequent discussion ever since he lost his place in the team at the turn of the year.

Chelsea veteran Petr Cech has been mooted as a potential target but it remains to be seen whether the Blues would allow the custodian to join a direct Premier League rival.

As a result, Muslera is understood to be Arsenal's back-up option, but they could be forced into making an offer if Manchester United firm up their alleged interest, or else they risk missing out on both transfer targets.

The South American is coming off the back of an impressive campaign in Turkey after helping Hamza Hamzaoglu's side secure a domestic league and cup double.

The Super Lig giants will be determined to keep hold of their star stopper, but accept that interest from England's elite will be difficult for the player to ignore.
