Xavi left in tears after Barcelona legends say goodbye

Barcelona midfielder Xavi broke down in tears on Wednesday evening during a live farewell tribute for the Spanish star.

The 35-year-old watched a video featuring legends of Barcelona’s past and present praising him for his success over his career. The video included amongst others; Louis van Gaal, Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets.

But the most touching sentiment of the evening, which reduced both Xavi and members of the crowd to tears, came from friend and fellow player Andreas Iniesta who spoke in support of his midfield colleague.

"We can't imagine starting next season and you not being there at training," said Iniesta. "Thanks, Xavi, for always being an example, for always putting the group before yourself. Thanks for all your advice.

“Thank you Xavi, for all those years, for all the talks, about football and other things. Those who know you know you will be back.”

The Barcelona academy graduate took the opportunity to announce he and his wife Nuria Cunillera were expecting their first child at the event.

Xavi has won it all with Barcelona over a 17 year career which started for the spanish no. 6 aged just 11 years old.

The player, who has worn the Barca shirt more times than other has seen his side be praised as the best ever football side in a trophy laden era of success.

Having won the Champions League, La Liga, the Cope del Ray and the Supercopa in his time with the Catalan club, Xavi now feel his time with Barca has come to an end.

As well as an illustrious club career Xavi also played for his country in 10 different international tournaments, winning both the World Cup and the Euro’s whilst representing Spain.
