Chelsea are ready to offer Asmir Begovic a huge pay rise to accept the role of understudy to Thibaut Courtois, reports The Telegraph.
Jose Mourinho is set to lose Petr Cech this summer and will need a new reserve goalkeeper ahead of next season.
The Blues have considered a bid for Queens Park Rangers veteran Robert Green, but Mourinho would prefer to sign someone closer to the quality of Cech.
Of course, telling a world-class goalkeeper and asking him to sit on the bench is only going to end one way, as they have found with Cech.
The Czech Republic international has spent 11-years at Stamford Bridge, enjoying ten of them as the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper under a number of different managers.
But he has lasted just one season as Courtois's reserve and seems almost certain to leave this summer.
Begovic has also been enjoying first-team football for Stoke City but is hungry for European football. He has waited patiently for the Potters to break into the top six, but the prospect of that happening before he retires now seems remote.
He is ready to leave the Britannia and agitate his way out if needs be. However, the prospect of sitting on the bench, only coming out for the FA Cup and League Cup, may not be a tempting proposition for the Bosnia and Herzegovina international.
That is exactly why Mourinho is ready to offer him a massive pay rise to try and coax him to west London.
The transfer merry-go-round
There is still some doubt as to whether the 27-year-old could be convinced by just money, especially when his chances of overtaking Courtois would be so remote.
There is also likely to be a lot more interest in Begovic if David de Gea leaves Manchester United for Real Madrid. The transfer would spark a chain reaction that could see a number of clubs making a bid for Begovic.
Manchester United may be that club, but should they manage to sign their chosen replacement, Hugo Lloris then Tottenham would surely see Begovic as the ideal man to take their vacated No.1 shirt.
Is Asmir Begovic TOO good to sit on Chelsea's bench?
