49ers suffer further set back after yet another young star retires

You have to feel kind of sorry for new San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula right now.

Only promoted to the job in January after Jim Harbaugh left for Michigan, Tomsula has seen his 49ers roster decimated by surprise retirements and the loss of veteran contributors.

Shock decision

And it only got worse today. With the departures of the likes of Patrick Willis, Justin Smith, and Chris Borland all still fresh in the memory, yet another young San Francisco player has walked away from the game.

NFL guru Adam Schefter was amongst the first to report that Anthony Davis - the 49ers first round pick from the 2010 NFL Draft - had informed the franchise that he would be retiring with immediate effect:

Decision explained

The official statement alluded to in Schefter's tweet sees the right tackle reveal that, like Borland and Willis before him, he is stepping away from the NFL due to fears over his health:

"After a few years of thought, I've decided it will be best for me to take a year or so away from the NFL. This will be a time for me to allow my Brain and Body a chance to heal. I know many won't understand my decision, that's ok," wrote the 25-year-old.

"I hope you too have the courage to live your life how you planned it when day dreaming to yourself growing up. Your Life is Your dream and you have the power to control that dream. I'm simply doing what's best for my body as well as my mental health at this time in my life."

Davis doesn't appear to have ruled out a return to pro football somewhere down the line but, after dealing with the lasting effects of a concussion that saw him miss four games for the 49ers in 2014, San Francisco will certainly be without him for next season.

With such a huge overhaul having gone on at the Cali franchise these past few months Jim Tomsula has a tough job on his hands as he nears the 2015 campaign.

Anthony Davis was expected to be a key part of an offensive line that would be looking to protect an improving Colin Kaepernick. Now, those remaining at the franchise are faced with reworking their plans yet again.
