Arsenal will launch a £25 million bid to sign Jackson Martinez once Arsene Wenger has trimmed his squad of those he deems surplus to requirements, according to reports.
The Independent today relay the information that Wenger is supposedly interested in finally signing the Colombia international, who has long been linked with an Emirates Stadium move due to his prolific strike rate.
However the Frenchman won’t move for the FC Porto star until he has successfully relieved himself of the trio of Lukas Podolski, Yaya Sanogo and Joel Campbell.

None of the strikers can boast having been regular options for Arsenal over the course of their careers in north London, and Martinez would certainly be a logical upgrade.
As Wenger seeks to provide a sustained challenge for the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City with regards to the Premier League title he’s going to need to improve certain areas of his squad, with the purchase of an out and out proven goalscorer sure to aid his charge.

Though the Gunners boast Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud, both of whom were impressive in front of goal last season, they lack a Sergio Aguero-type figure who can bag over 20 goals in the league and lead from the front.
In that respect Martinez, who netted a cool 32 goals across all competitions for Porto last year, might be the ideal option, and few will argue at his price-tag. That said supporters might be concerned with the departures of Sanogo and Campbell, both of whom were lauded as promising youngsters when they first arrived at the club.
Getting rid of surplus
In Podolski’s case the general consensus will likely be that he has had his opportunity to shine in north London and simple failed to take it.
The Germany international was farmed out on loan to Inter Milan in January but only managed to score just once in the Serie A, leaving Roberto Mancini unconvinced.
The 30-year-old does have interest in his signature from both Germany and Turkey, and so Wenger won’t have much trouble offloading him, though the same might not be said for Sanogo, who has never really looked a useful option at the highest level.
