Manchester United legend Bryan Robson has admitted that his former side will need to acquire the services of Chelsea four-time league winner Petr Cech if they want to compete for the league next season.
It seems like Manchester United’s player of the season David de Gea will be moving on this summer to the Spanish capital of Madrid, although any deal for the Spaniard is yet to be finalised.
Speaking to the Mirror, Robson said: “It’s important to bring in players as soon as possible. If De Gea has to be replaced, Cech would be ideal - he could do for the club what Edwin van der Sar did.”
Cech helped Chelsea win everything at club level including the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League.
United look set to loose several players over the summer in what could prove to be a mass exodus out of Old Trafford. The likes of van Persie, Falcao, Nani, De Gea and Rafael could all be on their way out of the club.
Robson: United need to strengthen
Robson believes it’s important these players are replaced early, and replaced with quality: “Ideally, United will be able to strengthen the back, midfield and attack. And also, hopefully, one or two of the kids will make their mark, as the likes of Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes did.”
That being said United should be able to attract top players having qualified for the Champions League but Robson admits their is still work to be done to qualify:
“The first job, though, is to get through the qualifying stage of the Champions League and that’s not a given. There will be some top clubs in the draw with United, so it could be really tough.
Despite the fact that the window does not officially open till 12am on Wednesday 1 July teams are already doing deals as United have already signed Memphis Depay and Liverpool have brought in James Milner and Danny Ings.
