Manchester United will send a scout to watch Bernard Mensah play for Ghana against Mauritius on Sunday, reports Goal.

It will be the third time a representative from Old Trafford has made checks on the midfielder after he was watched whilst playing for his club side Vitoria Guimaraes against Sporting Lisbon and Estoril.

The 20-year-old has clearly impressed Louis van Gaal and another Manchester United scout will be sent to run the rule over him in Ghana's 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Accra.

Mensah made his debut for the Black Stars on June 8 against Togo, scoring the only goal of the game in the process to give his team the win.

A Manchester United scout is reported to have been in the crowd for the game and would no doubt been impressed with his powerful first-half strike.

But the Red Devils want further checks made on Mensah before they firm up their interest but another impressive display in his first competitive international match against Mauritius could convince Van Gaal to make a move.

Developing quickly

Mensah has become a key player for Portuguese side Vitoria Guimaraes this season despite only being promoted from the youth team last summer.

He played in 31 games last season and scored five goals, created five more and helped the Primera Liga outfit qualify for the Europa League.

One for the future

Should Manchester United make a move, he would certainly be one for the future rather than a first-team member at Old Trafford next season.

There is also a very real chance to Mensah would not qualify for a work permit, although they would be able to loan him back to the Portuguese outfit until he obtains a European passport.

Bigger fish to fry

Van Gaal will certainly be prioritising a more established midfield signing this summer with Borussia Dortmund's Ilkay Gundogan and Southampton stay Morgan Schneiderlin on his radar.

The Dutchman is looking to cover for the frequently injured Michael Carrick and has a rumoured £200m to spend on transfer targets.
