The Spanish ace, filmed exclusively by Sport Bible, said: “I think Messi is the best. I would like to sign him for United. I know it’s not so easy, but I wish.”
Unfortunately for Herrera and Manchester United, the chances of the Red Devils signing the four-time Ballon d’Or winner are practically non-existent, either now or in the future. But the former Athletic Bilbao star still dreams of playing alongside his hero one day.
Herrera has made no secret of the fact he believes Messi is a better player than Real Madrid star, and Manchester United hero, Cristiano Ronaldo.
Back in February he named Messi as the ideal signing for Manchester United, acknowledging his answer was “not good” for the Red Devils’ faithful because of their affiliation with Ronaldo.
And a month later he told Spanish newspaper El Pais he almost cried watching Messi’s magnificent performance against Manchester City in the Champions League.
Herrera's Messi admiration a concern for United?
Herrera’s admiration for Messi might be a little concerning for Manchester United, whose summer signing has been linked with a move to Barcelona in recent months.
If the Catalan giants eventually came knocking, the opportunity of returning to his home country to play alongside Messi at the Camp Nou could prove too tempting to turn down.
Manchester United have no desire to sell Herrera, who has three years left to run on his contract, while Barcelona are banned from registering new players until January - so there’s virtually no chance of a deal happening this summer.
But if Herrera continues producing eye-catching performances at Old Trafford, it’s only natural that reports linking him with a move to the Camp Nou will intensify.
Herrera finished the season in fine form
At one point this season it looked as if Herrera would leave United after one season, after failing to convince Louis van Gaal he could carry out the specific instructions asked of him.
But after the New Year he began to play an increasingly prominent role in the Dutchman’s team before becoming one of the first names on the team-sheet.
Herrera finished the season with six goals in 26 Premier League appearances - while he also netted two more goals in the FA Cup - and will be expected to continue his fine form into the 2015-16 campaign.
