Fans of the Tennessee Titans finally have a reason to be optimistic for the first time in a long, long while.
The Titans decided that they needed a completely new offense if they were to succeed in 2015 and have done just that by drafting wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham, running back David Cobb and Heisman-winning quarterback Marcus Mariota to turn their fortunes around.
And it seems like the decision to bring in Mariota is already proving to be a pretty good one for the Titans.
Mariota has been receiving rave reviews so far during OTA's and the latest to weigh in clamouring about the work of the second overall pick is the Titans wide receivers coach Shawn Jefferson.
Jefferson spoke to Paul Kuharsky of ESPN.com and said that his receivers are rushing for chances to catch passes from Mariota because the rookie’s throws are always “right on the money,” praising Mariota's incredible accuracy.
"He is deadly accurate,” Jefferson said. “I am just giddy about his future going forward … He’s the real deal."
Jefferson went on to compare Mariota to one Matthew Stafford, the Detroit Lions quarterback and Pro Bowler.
"A couple years ago I was back in Detroit and when Matthew Stafford stepped into the huddle the first time, once I heard his voice and the way he called a play, I said, ‘OK, that’s a real one right there.’ Same way with this one. He’s real. He’s got the goods."
When asked to describe just what it is that Mariota has that makes him so excited for the future of the Titans, Jefferson listed off the Hawaii native's accuracy with his arm, the way that Mariota has come in and learned the playbook - unlike a certain Johnny Manziel - and the way he is already a leader.
"No. 1, it’s his accuracy. No. 2, he’s come in and grasped the offense. And No. 3 is the way the guys respond to him, the way he’s able to go in that huddle and take control," Jefferson said.
