San Francisco 49ers fans have been having a tough time of it this offseason, with a new player leaving the franchise virtually every week it seems.
As you might expect then, in the wake of Anthony Davis, Patrick Willis and Chris Borland having quit the NFL citing fears over their long-term health, a story linking yet another 49ers player to leaving the game is always going to gain traction.
And that is exactly what happened today when a new report, including quotes from Eric Reid, seemed to suggest there could be another name to add to the retirement list in the near future. The 49ers player, though, has reacted furiously to the story - hitting out at the reporter this afternoon.
The original story, published by SFgate.com's Eric Branch, suggested Reid was considering going to see a specific doctor to be evaluated and had, in the past, considered giving up football altogether such were his fears concerning concussion.
The safety has since taken to Twitter to condemn the report and the reporter's motives in a series of Tweets:
New head coach Jim Tomsula would have been forgiven for wondering why he accepted the HC role when (and if) he saw the headline this morning.
Not another one
After a near unprecedented exodus of players this offseason 49ers fans, too, would have been concerned to learn another rising star might be wavering on his future.
Clearly Reid felt he had to make a stand and in doing so he will be hoping the 49ers can return to focussing on improving on a 8-8 2014 campaign rather than trying to second guess who might be the next to step away from the team.
It is never boring at the San Francisco 49ers this summer that is for sure.
