West Ham United have announced the signing of Sampdoria midfielder Pedro Obiang for an undisclosed fee.
The 23-year-old has decided to leave Italy for England after penning a four-year deal with The Hammers despite strong interest from other clubs across Europe.
Obiang, who has represented Spain at U-21 level, spent five years in Italy with Sampdoria, making over 100 Serie A appearances for the club, scoring just four goals.
However, last season was deemed his breakthrough campaign as he played 35 times and scored three goals for Il Blucerciati, helping them finish seventh in Italy and achieve a Europa League spot for next season.
Obiang was at Upton Park today to speak to the club's official website and also pose for photos, and the midfielder expressed his delight at signing for the Premier League club.
“I’m very happy to have signed," Obiang told the Hammers' official website. "We have been talking about this for a long time and now I’ve finally got the chance to come here.
“I went on holiday after the season had finished and I was looking forward to receiving that call to tell me where and when to sign for this Club!
“I’m very excited to play in the Premier League. It’s a style of football that will help me to progress as a player and as a person, so it will be very good."
The midfielder completed his medical earlier today at Spire Roding Hospital, which is the Club's official private hospital.
The former-Sampdoria man is Slaven Bilic's first signing since taking over from Sam Allardyce, news which was broken yesterday, and Obiang has revealed his excitement about working with the former-Croatia manager.
Midfielder Excited with Bilic
“I think Bilic is a manager that can do very well here. I know that he was a West Ham player and he did very well with the Croatian national team.
"He is a manager that likes to play good football and I really like that so I am sure that we will get along very well."
The Hammers are expected to be very busy this summer after Bilic's arrival, but Obiang is deemed a good start with most of the club's fans delighted at the signing.
