Yesterday Jose Mourinho spoke about Radamel Falcao as if a deal to bring him to Chelsea had already been done. Today, the Blues have been linked with Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin as that very deal becomes increasingly doubtful.
The Special One spoke openly about the prospect of Falcao moving to Stamford Bridge this summer, saying that he hopes to help the 29-year-old "reach his level".
Similar to Manchester United, Chelsea are hoping to agree a loan deal with AS Monaco, but reports in France suggest that Falcao is far from set on a move to west London.
Late interest from Liverpool seems to have turned Falcao's head and the 29-year-old now deciding which move would give him the best chance of saving a crumbling career.
With Diego Costa already established in a one-striker system at Chelsea, Falcao faces another season fighting for a starting place as he did at Manchester United. Needless to say, a deal with the Blues is far from complete.
As a result, Chelsea sources have told ESPN that they are now looking into the possibility of signing Austin, who this week made his debut for England after an impressive season for QPR.
Despite the Hoops being relegated, Austin scored 18 goals in the Premier League, only finishing behind Harry Kane as the top English scorer.
Austin may not share the same pedigree as Falcao, but he certainly outperformed him in the same division last season with the Colombian scoring just four goals for Manchester United.
He also has youth on his side at 25-years-old compared to Falcao, who is 29 and comes with homegrown status to boot.
Not only that, but Austin would demand many times less than Falcao's £265,000-a-week wages, making him a much more economical option. Signing him permanently may indeed cost less than signing Falcao for one season.
However, the striker would have to accept a role as Chelsea's third-choice striker behind Loic Remy and Costa. That would mean significantly less playing time and would certainly harm his chances of making the England team for next summer's European Championships.
Would Chelsea fans prefer Radamel Falcao on loan or Charlie Austin permanently?
