Xavi Hernandez has told Neymar to start showing more respect to his opponents on the football pitch.

The Brazilian forward sparked a mass brawl during the recent Copa de Rey final against Athletic Bilbao after an audacious attempt at showboating went wrong.

It caused uproar on both the pitch and in the stands and Xavi believes it is time that Neymar starts to respect his opponents more.

"He needs to seriously think about how he should act. Maybe that sort of thing is accepted in Brazil, but it's a thorny issue in Spain," Xavi told Sport .

"He should reflect about it because he's an extraordinary, hard-working and humble lad, but he has that Brazilian attitude, according to which such things are part of the show, while here they're seen as a lack of respect."

The bus incident

But this is not the first time Xavi has given Neymar a dressing down this week after he was filmed shoving the Brazilian superstar in the face during Barcelona's open-top bus parade.

Plenty of fans turned out to celebrate Barcelona's treble-winning squad but the mood threatened to turn sour when Xavi pushed Neymar, with the forward looking less than impressed.

"It's alright to have three or four beers, but the parade is for the supporters, to thank them, and you can't just be in your own world."

Xavi, who will leave Barcelona when his contract expires this summer, has drawn light on the situation.

Messing around

"He was trying to take my shoes off and they were pushing me when I was standing on the edge of the bus. I told them to stop messing around and to focus on the fans, since the parade is for them," he added.

"It's alright to have three or four beers, but the parade is for the supporters, to thank them, and you can't just be in your own world."

Fine form

Whether Neymar is liked by Xavi or not, he is sure to become a fan favourite just as the midfielder did if he keeps up his current form.

The 23-year-old scored 43 goals for Barcelona in all competitions including an impressive ten in the Champions League.

That put him equal with both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi; a place he can expect to take up in more ways than one in the near future.

Is Xavi right? Does Neymar need to start showing more respect on the pitch?
