Memphis Depay has said he can become a Manchester United great after completing his move to Old Trafford on Friday.
The 21-year-old has signed a four-year deal with the Red Devils, who have paid PSV Eindhoven a reported £31 million for his services.
Depay worked under Louis van Gaal with the Netherlands national team at last summer’s World Cup finals in Brazil and has continued to enhance his burgeoning reputation since then, scoring an impressive 28 goals in 40 matches last season.
Not short of self-confidence, the ambitious Depay hopes to follow in the footsteps of great United wingers including Ryan Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo, and feels he has every chance of doing just that.
“I believe I can be a great player for Manchester United,” were the 11 words that every Manchester United supporter will be delighted to hear. “I’m going to let my feet speak. I hope I can develop here in the Premier League and I hope I can be like those great legends one time in my career. I’m going to work hard, so let’s see.”
Depay: Van Gaal is world's best manager
Depay admits, though, that the Premier League will be a much tougher challenge than the Eredivisie - but feels it’s the right time for the next stage of his career.
“I’m young and can make more steps,” the Dutchman told Manchester United's official website. “I know it’s a tough league: everything goes faster and the league is very strong. But I will learn and get stronger, faster and better here on the training ground. So I believe I can develop and bring more out of myself.”
Depay hailed Van Gaal as “the best manager in the world” and labelled Manchester United the “biggest club the world”, stating his desire to win the biggest trophies on offer.
Van Gaal, meanwhile, commented: “I know Memphis well from our time working together in the Netherlands national team. He is a young versatile player who has the ability to play in a number of different positions.
"It will take time for Memphis to get used to the rhythm of the Premier League but I have no doubt that he has the potential to become a great footballer for this club and he is at the right club to continue the good work he has done so far.”
Depay to make United debut next month
Manchester United fans could catch their first glimpse of Depay in the famous red shirt next month, on the club’s pre-season tour of the United States.
Van Gaal’s side take on Club America on July 18 in Washington, before matches against San Jose Earthquakes, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.
Depay is expected to be joined by at least two more signings before then, as the transfer window swings into action.
