Speaking on El Chiringuito, Gallardo revealed the surprise news live on television, but refused to confirm whether it was Chelsea or Costa’s agent who made the move.
It was reported earlier this month that Costa wanted to quit Chelsea, in order to return to former club Atletico Madrid, after failing to settle in London. But these rumours were dismissed by the Brazil-born Spain international, who told Chelsea’s official website: “I have no reason to leave this place, I love it, the fans love me and I want to stay.”
It must be noted that Gallardo’s record when it comes to transfer rumours is suspect to say the least.
Reportedly a registered FIFA agent, the journalist has a track record of revealing shock transfer news to audiences in Spain. However, back in January 2014 it was Gallardo who revealed the news that Costa had reached a verbal agreement to sign for Chelsea. Make of that, what you will.
Chelsea will not sell Diego Costa
It’s highly unlikely that Chelsea would have offered Costa to Real Madrid. Jose Mourinho is a big fan of the powerful striker, 26, who scored 21 goals in 34 matches for the Blues in his debut season.
Costa played a key role in helping Chelsea end their five-year wait for the Premier League title and will begin next season, barring an unexpected change of heart from Mourinho, as the first-choice striker at Stamford Bridge next season.
It’s not beyond the realms of possibility, though, that Costa’s agent has been putting out some feelers if his star client is feeling unsettled in the English capital.
