The destination of Jackson Martinez has been the subject of much speculation in recent days after it was confirmed that a club had agreed to meet the buyout clause of the coveted Porto centre-forward.
At that club is AC Milan. Sorry to break it to you Arsenal and Manchester United fans. This news was revealed by Pinto de Costa, the president of Porto, who had previously been teasing everyone as to just where Martinez would end up.
Milan will pay €35 million to secure the acquisition of Martinez, who will finalise his transfer to the San Siro once he has returned from international duty in Chile, where he is representing Colombia in the Copa America.
“Jackson Martinez has chosen Milan,” Da Costa told Porto Canal.
“Before going on holiday Jackson announced he wanted to leave. The €35m clause is not up for debate and must be paid.
“I learned just now that Jackson has chosen Milan. This is what he wants, the destination is irrelevant as far as I am concerned. I want him to be happy.”
One person who will be breathing a sigh of relief at this announcement will be Olivier Giroud, who would have perhaps been displaced in the Arsenal team by Martinez were he, as had been suggested, to have arrived at the Emirates Stadium.
Martinez has been one of the most prolific strikers in Europe in recent seasons, scoring 92 goals during his three seasons with Porto, and could have justly been Arsenal’s leading forward had he moved to north London.
But, alas, Milan is where the 28-year-old will be playing next season, which would appear something of a coup, particularly given Manchester United had also been linked as Louis van Gaal looks to reinforce his own strikeforce.
