Roman Reigns has not gotten off to the best start as a major player in the WWE.
Reigns was thrust into the limelight with his win at the Royal Rumble, and the WWE Universe didn't exactly take too kindly to it, booing him out of the building with not even The Rock able to save him from the angry masses.
WWE fans have taken more to Reigns now after he lost at WrestleMania thanks to a Seth Rollins Money in the Bank cash-in, but some resentment is still there, just waiting for Vince McMahon or Triple H to plan another huge push.
Heyman's Home Truths
Paul Heyman was recently a guest on the Chael Sonnen hosted show “You’re Welcome”, and he tried to offer some explanation at just why Reigns was so viciously hated in the past.
“I think what happened to Roman is he’s the right guy in the right place at the wrong time. Roman came in an had all this momentum behind him," Heyman started off.
Heyman noted that it was Daniel Bryan's mere presence that doomed Reigns to hatred. Bryan is far more liked, nay loved, by WWE fans and the decision to add him to the Rumble but have him go out so early was just terrible.
"Had [WWE] not announced Daniel Bryan’s return at the Royal Rumble and put it in people’s heads that Daniel Bryan would make this miraculous come back two years in a row, then I think Roman Reigns would have been the person everyone would look to win the Royal Rumble.”
Bryan is the perfect underdog, a smaller athlete who has to be on tip-toes to see eye-to-eye with his peers and punches above his weight. Compare this to Reigns, who has still only been pinned once in his single career, had pretty much everything handed to him and was even given blue contact lenses to try and make him more likable.
If WWE fans hate anything, it is the WWE trying to tell them who to like. That is suicide and it turned Reigns from a future star with potential to the most hated man in the company.
