Manchester City are gearing up to make a shock move for Manchester United's Angel di Maria and have already made contact with his agent according to the Sunday Times.
The Argentinian ace could be on the move in the summer window just a year after completing his club-record £59.7 million move to the Red Devils following a disappointing maiden campaign.
The former Real Madrid man managed just three goals in the Premier League and lost his place in the first team to Ashley Young towards the end of the 2014/15 season. Di Maria has previously revealed that he was close to joining Paris Saint Germain before he signed for Manchester United - and also admitted he'd be open to a move to the Parc des Prince in the future.
PSG remain in the hunt to sign Di Maria but it is the news of Manchester City's interest that will generate the most headlines. According to the Sunday Times Manchester City's director of football Txiki Begiristain has been handed a sizeable transfer budget to complete the deals that will take them back to the top, and Di Maria is on his list of potential targets.
The Times add that Manchester City have asked Di Maria's representatives whether they would be open to what would be a controversial transfer, and as it stands the Argentinian would prefer a move abroad. Bayern Munich and Barcelona have also been suggested as suitors.
Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has publicly insisted he won't let Di Maria leave Old Trafford; a sentiment echoed by the player himself.
Di Maria is currently away with Argentina at the Copa America, and looked to have helped his side claim a win in their first game of the tournament against Paraguay after winning his side a penalty, which was converted by Lionel Messi after Sergio Aguero had opened the scoring.
However Paraguay fought back from 2-0 down to claim a point thanks to goals from Nelson Haedo Valdez and Lucas Barrios.
