Neymar Jr is well on his way to matching the legendary Pele’s goalscoring record for Brazil, despite the fact he’s only 23.
As astounding as it may be the youngster has now scored 44 goals for his national team; no mean feat considering the praise Wayne Rooney is garnering due to the fact he’s almost broken Sir Bobby Charlton’s record of having bagged 49 goals on the international stage.
Neymar the man
Far be it from us to claim Neymar is more effective for Brazil than he’s been at club level, but it certainly looks to be the case, even if he has been one of the most impressive forwards in Europe since his move to Barcelona.
The crux of the matter is simply that Neymar appears to be ridiculously talented for his age, and though he’s not quite on par with the likes Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo there’s barely a supporter in the world that can deny he is on course for the hall of fame.
Brilliance vs Peru
If there is then they’ll have been given food for thought by the South American icon’s display against Peru this weekend just gone, wherein not only did he score and provide a last minute assist for Douglas Costa’s winner, but also produced a dazzling piece of skill that perfectly encapsulated his sheer brilliance.
As is to be expected when a player completes an act of such audacity Neymar was quickly accosted by the opponent he had effectively turned inside out, but not before he could have his way by flicking it over him not once, but twice.
The heir to the greatest
Indeed Brazil’s number ten is making quite the name for himself as Pele’s makeshift heir apparent. The similarities between the two with regards to the impact they have had - or are having in Neymar’s case - are there to quite easily be found, and at the current rate it won’t be too long before fans begin to wonder if perhaps Neymar has it within him to eclipse the feats of the man considered by many to be the greatest player to ever lace up a pair of boots.
Football fans, is it possible that Neymar can be better than Pele? What did you make of his skill vs Peru. Let us know in the comments box below.
