Siem de Jong spent a lot of last season injured, but had he stayed fit, Newcastle United would have been nowhere near the relegation zone.
De Jong has a fantastic natural ability to score goals and pick out passes; this kind of ability is priceless in the Premier League, or any league.
When he was in the Newcastle team last season, they looked more organised, more of a threat going forward and much more composed. He is a natural leader and a fantastic player, but he needs to stay fit.
De Jong followed his brother Luuk to Newcastle after the latter spent half of 2013/14 season on loan at St James' Park.
Luuk was somewhat of a disappointment but although Siem has made a bigger impact, he still has a lot to prove.
Siem de Jong must stay fit
He needs to make sure that he stays fit for next season because Newcastle need him. His creativity and his goals will surely make sure that Newcastle get a top ten finish and challenge in the cups next season. He is the perfect player to fill that number ten role.
Steve McClaren has already hailed the Dutch star having played managed FC Twente playing against De Jong.
He mentioned that De Jong was his nightmare when he was at Ajax. Saying that he and Cristian Eriksen were the two players that stood out.
This is what McClaren, according to the Chronicle, had to say about De Jong: “Siem de Jong’s a player I know well. He was my nightmare in Holland! In the Ajax days, him and Cristian Eriksen were the two players in the Eredivisie who looked excellent.
"Siem is a smart, intelligent player and I’m looking forward to working with him. He’s a difference maker. You need a few difference makers in your team and he’s one of them.”
It's obvious that the new Toon boss is a fan so that means that if he can stay fit, Siem de Jong will be a key part of the Newcastle team next season.
It is of paramount importance that he stays fit and puts his injury troubles behind him for the coming season. He suffered from a collapsed lung just as he was about to return from a knee injury last season, this put him out for nearly the whole season.
He returned for one game in which he scored a fantastic volley. After that game he picked up yet another injury in training, which ruled him out for the remaining few games.
McClaren wants game changers in his team and he has already said that De Jong could be one of them. He is hoping that one of the two strikers and one centre half that the club want to buy as part of a six man recruitment drive, can be the other.
Let's hope that Siem de Jong can keep his fitness next season because I think that if he can, he could be one of the most impressive players in the league next season.
