Manchester United’s latest signing Memphis Depay has uploaded a photo of himself alongside the in-demand Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba.
Depay, 21, posted the image alongside the caption: “Real recognize Real.”
Needless to say, the sight of one of Manchester United’s top transfer targets - and, indeed, former players - alongside their latest signing was enough to get the club’s fans excited on social media.
Many United fans would love to see the £74 million-rated Pogba back at Old Trafford, three years after he left the club for Turin, and made Depay aware of their feelings on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
Some United fans, however, are now optimistic that Depay’s apparent friendship with Pogba could swing things in the Red Devils’ favour.
“Memphis, please drag him back to OT!” wrote one user on Facebook.
Another said: “I’ll name my first born Memphis Paul if you bring him back to MUFC!”
While another fan posted: “Agent Memphis tell Pogba to come back home, we need him.”
Pogba still "loves" United
Pogba has publicly stated on a couple of occasions since leaving United that he still “loves” the club.
The France international, 22, took the difficult decision to walk out of Old Trafford after failing to convince Sir Alex Ferguson.
Pogba was surprisingly overlooked for a Premier League clash between Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers in December 2011, despite the fact the Red Devils had no recognised first-team central midfielders available for selection, and this was the straw that broke the camel’s back for the Frenchman.
Ferguson lined up with right-back Rafael and winger Park Ji-Sung in the middle as United slumped to a 3-2 defeat.
Pogba would, years later, admit he was “disgusted” with Ferguson’s decision to pick a right-back ahead of him.
Ferguson’s failure to retain Pogba’s services is now widely regarded as one of the biggest mistakes of his 27-year Manchester United tenure.
Pogba likely to join a Spanish club
Louis van Gaal is acutely aware of the quality Pogba possesses, but winning the race for his signature will be far from straight-forward.
Both Barcelona and Real Madrid are keen to sign the Frenchman who, in all probability, will begin the 2015-16 campaign as a La Liga player.
However, if he joins Barcelona he will need to wait until January before making his first-team debut, with the recently-crowned European champions unable to register new signings for the rest of 2015.
