Petr Cech will finally be able to complete his move to Arsenal this summer to the tune of £11 million once Jose Mourinho has acquired his replacement, according to reports.
Information in the Daily Mail today relays the fact that Mourinho is intent on signing an alternative for the Czech international before he allows him to put pen to paper on any deal that will see him head elsewhere.
For the past few weeks Arsenal have been hotly linked with the 33-year-old, but it would seem that they’re finally on the verge of landing their man.
The Mail’s report details how Stoke City’s Asmir Begovic and Queens Park Rangers’ Rob Green are the preferred individuals for the role of Thibaut Courtois’ effective understudy, with the former having been tracked for some time now and the Blues pushing hard to acquire him.
The Bosnian stopper is rated at £10.5m and so is virtually a like for like equivalent to Cech with regards to financial figures.
He’s carved a reputation for himself at the Britannia Stadium as a reliable and imposing presence between the sticks. Were Chelsea fans on mass given the option it’s safe to assume they would prefer Begovic to Green.
Cech to Arsenal
However there can be no doubting the idea that they’d want to keep Cech ahead of all other options, although that avenue seems all but blocked off now.
Courtois stands between the veteran and a regular first-team opportunities, and Mourinho made it abundantly clear with his decisions in the campaign just gone which goalkeeper he favours moving forward.
Enter Arsenal, and the chance for Cech to once more be the undisputed number one at a club looking to compete for major honours on all fronts.
Arsene Wenger can currently pick between Wojciech Szczesny and David Ospina but neither of those men inspire all that much confidence, and Emirates Stadium fans would feel far more assured if Cech were the man charged with being their last line of defence.
If the latest information is to be taken as gospel then it is indeed Arsenal who sit highest in Cech’s estimates as well. The Chelsea ‘keeper is said to be reluctant to uproot his family, thus potentially ruling out a move abroad to Paris Saint-Germain, who are still thought to be interest.
