Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has been told he should seriously consider a move to Manchester United if an offer is forthcoming.
The German ace is one of a handful of top midfielders to have been linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks, and Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal - who managed him during a spell in charge at the Allianz Arena - is said to be keen.
Schweinsteiger is seemingly surplus to requirements at Bayern under Pep Guardiola having made just 15 starts in the Bundesliga last term thanks to the presence of Xabi Alonso.
That could free up a move to Manchester United in the summer window, and Bayern legend Lothar Matthaus believes the World Cup winner should seriously consider a move if an offer is made because Van Gaal will be able to get the best out of him.
"Schweinsteiger needs a coach that will play him according to his strengths and Van Gaal will surely do that," he told reporters.
"If there is an offer from Manchester, Bastian should give it serious consideration."
Manchester United have been linked with the likes of Paul Pogba, Ilkay Gundogan and Arturo Vidal as they look to bolster their midfield options, however Schweinsteiger appears to be the most likely option.
"He [Guardiola] played Alonso there in the most important matches and Schweinsteiger had to step into another role that does not suit him," continued Matthaus, who won seven Bundesliga titles across two spells with Bayern.
"Schweinsteiger has never been the fastest player in the world and, as he turns 31 soon, that will not improve in the future, but he is certainly intelligent enough and has the necessary vision to be the central link between defence and offensive midfield."
The 30-year-old has just a year remaining on his contract with Bayern Munich and should be available for a reasonable price. Pogba could well be on the move in the summer window but the Red Devils would have to break their transfer record to secure a player who they let walk away for nothing in 2012.
Gundogan is reportedly in talks with Barcelona while Vidal is in hot water after allegedly crashing his car while driving under the influence last night while on international duty with Chile at the Copa America.
Schweinsteiger is just the type of canny operator Manchester United need. Van Gaal has a reputation for developing youngsters and he has a fairly youthful squad on his hands - and the addition of the German ace could make a huge difference.
He is a leader from the middle of the pitch and a big figure in the dressing room which will come in handy as the Red Devils try to get back to the top of the table and make an impact in the Champions League.
