Daniel Sturridge has hinted that he is disappointed Liverpool didn’t do more to sign Micah Richards before the right-back penned a deal with Aston Villa, with a recent tweet.
Richards, who spent the entirety of last season on loan at Fiorentina, failed to make a positive impression Manuel Pellegrini at Manchester City and thus his exit this summer was all but confirmed months ago.
Having not looked overly efficient in Italy though it more became a question of which English club he was going to join, with his pedigree said to be attracting interest from the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.
Earlier this week though it was announced that the 13 times capped England international had decided to join Tim Sherwood’s Villa, despite the fact they finished just one place above the relegation spots last season.
As expected the news surprised a fair few people, one of whom is Liverpool’s Sturridge. The Reds striker took to social media to post a tweet that some have taken as a hint of his disgruntlement at Brendan Rodgers not doing more to try and sign Richards when he had the chance.
With Jon Flanagan out for the foreseeable future and Glen Johnson having taken his leave of Anfield after seeing his contract expire one does wonder why Rodgers didn’t push harder to land Richards, who has all the experience needed to patrol the right flank for a side pushing to get into the top four.
Since Pellegrini’s appointment the 26-year-old might not have enjoyed opportunities in abundance but prior to that he had managed to rack up plenty of performances for the Citizens, becoming something of a fan favourite in the process.
What’s more it can be assumed that Rodgers will be desperate to ensure he’s got big characters in the dressing room come next season, with Steven Gerrard and the aforesaid Johnson - two of last season’s most experienced players - both moving onto pastures new.
It’s all well and good having exciting talents such as Emre Can and Philippe Coutinho, but unless they have more senior figures to look up to they could struggle to perform on a consistent basis.
