According to reports emerging from Spain - and cited by the Daily Star - Real Madrid are to rival Manchester United for Nicolas Otamendi's signature.
The Argentine defender has attracted much interest from Europe's top clubs, with Louis van Gaal making the centre-back his top summer transfer target.
Manchester United are facing a tough fight to land Otamendi who is priced at £35 million, but have made an opening bid of £25 million, according to the paper.
It looks increasingly likely that the Red Devils will have to lock horns with Los Blancos, who are also keen to sign the South American stopper in the forthcoming transfer window.
New Real Madrid boss Rafael Benitez has taken a liking to the defender and is expected to launch a bid for Otamendi's services soon.
What could develop into an expensive battle between the two clubs is already heating up and United must negotiate a deal for Otamendi before the Spanish giants table their bid.
Otamendi is currently away representing Argentina at the Copa America, but has informed his club Valencia that he wants to leave. The 27-year-old, has played 35 league games out of a possible 38 and has scored six goals for his team.
Manchester United might seem a much suited option for the Valencia player with fellow countrymen Angel Di Maria and Marcos Rojo already part of the Old Trafford set up.
But, with Valencia holding out for £35 million it remains to be seen where the player will play his football next season.
