Chelsea fans have been given the perfect motivation to ramp up their noise level at Stamford Bridge next season, as a study has shown that they have the least passionate fans in the Premier League.
As relayed by the Daily Mail a new study, using football fans’ Twitter usage as its primary metric, has concluded that the Blues are worse than Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal when it comes to ‘Twitter noise per fan’.
In fact, Chelsea supporters are apparently more passive than those who follow clubs like Hull City, QPR and Burnley, even though that trio of clubs were relegated last season.
They may have been crowned Premier League champions but the table in question pegs the Blues’ faithful on Twitter as boasting just 0.12 as a score in terms of the noise per fan, leaving them rock bottom of said league.
One thing they can take heart from is the fact that they’re very close to the top of the happiest fans table in the same report. As expected the Blues were handed a score of 95%, leaving them fifth, although it was Swansea City who topped that particular bill, as they notched 98%.
Naturally Chelsea fans responded quickly with their own tweets. Here are some of our favourites.
Given how big a club Chelsea have become under Roman Abramovich it’s obvious that their fan base has grown significantly.
Lucrative sponsorship deals with the likes of Samsung and Yamaha have greatly increased their following in Asia, whilst their transfer activity over the past decade has seen many big nations represented in Chelsea colours.
Are they plastic?
That said it some would argue that the Blues, much like Manchester City, can attribute a large portion of their fans purely due to Abramovich’s cash injection that subsequently saw the club start to challenge for major trophies each year.
The old ‘plastic fans’ accusation is second only to ‘glory-hunters’ when those who follow other big Premier League teams discuss Chelsea, although the exact validity of that statement is difficult to quantify.
Chelsea fans, would you argue that you’re far more passionate than some of the other clubs’ supporters that are above you in the table? Let us know what you think in the comments box below.
