Hector Bellerin has hinted that he may never have left Barcelona to join Arsenal if it had not been for Cesc Fabregas.

Fabregas, now a star for Chelsea, blazed a trail after leaving La Masia for London at the tender age of 15 and was later followed by the likes of Fran Merida and Jon Toral.

However, while Merida failed to impress and Toral is yet to make an impact, Fabregas went on to become the club's youngest ever goalscorer and would later succeed Thierry Henry to become captain at 21-years-old.

Bellerin is on his way to emulating Fabregas's achievements after forcing his way into Arsene Wenger's plans this season, vaulting both Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers in the pecking order.

"He showed that if work hard and you want it enough, you will always have the chance."

Now the right-back has confirmed that he may never have been convinced to leave his hometown of Barcelona for Arsenal if Fabregas had not experienced so much success by doing the same thing.

Blazing a trail

He told Arsenal fan TV: "Cesc was a big inspirational for me.

"It was an important move for me, to move away from your family and friends and my city, but to see someone had succeeded was really important.

"He showed that if work hard and you want it enough, you will always have the chance."

Coming from nowhere

Bellerin looked to be moving further away from the first-team just 12 months ago after returning from an unsuccessful loan spell at Watford.

The arrival of Chambers threatened to push the Spain under-21 international further down the order and another loan move looked likely. However, Bellerin never thought he would fail to impress Wenger.

"There has been a lot of injuries and once all the players are fit and I still keep playing that is probably the moment I will start to feel more comfortable"

Asked if failure had ever crossed his mind, he said: "That thought never crossed my mind. I just keep working hard.

"There has been a lot of injuries and once all the players are fit and I still keep playing that is probably the moment I will start to feel more comfortable.

"But I don't think I can do that now and I need to keep working hard to cement my place in the starting line-up."
