Arsenal have launched an improved £28.5m bid for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, according to The Sun.

Rupert Murdoch's mouthpiece to the masses claims Arsene Wenger is ready to make the 23-year-old the third biggest signing in Arsenal's history.

The Gunners have already seen their opening offer of £20m knocked back by the Portuguese outfit and are likely to get a similar notice with regards to this improved bid.

Carvalho has a release clause of £37m inserted into his contract and Sporting Lisbon want the extra £8.5m included in performance related add-ons.

That would take the potential transfer fee above and beyond the £35m Arsenal paid to sign Alexis Sanchez for Barcelona and leave Carvalho only second to Mesut Ozil in the club's transfer record books.

Wenger is ready to consider a third and final offer and may well accept the demands of Sporting if the terms of the £8.5m bonus payments are to his liking.

The perfect candidate

Carvalho is now seen as the perfect candidate to strengthen his midfield and a series of impressive performances seems to have taken his standing above that of Southampton's Morgan Schneiderlin.

“I would like to play in England, it’s a league that I’ve long admired"

The France international has long been considered Arsenal's top transfer target for the summer window, but Carvalho's titanic performance against England Under-21s in the ongoing European Championships reminded his Premier League suitors what an exceptional talent he is.

Manchester United are believed to be keeping tabs on the situation and could respond if Arsenal have a bid accepted, but Wenger is hoping his impressive offer will help his team beat the Red Devils.

Dreaming of England

Carvalho has recently confirmed he wishes to play in England.

He said last week: “I would like to play in England, it’s a league that I’ve long admired.

“It’s one of the most important leagues and I think my physical strength makes me a good fit.”
