Football News

Liverpool have confirmed the signing of highly-rated Charlton Athletic midfielder Joe Gomez for an undisclosed fee, beating Arsenal to secure his future.

The youngster’s rise to prominence at The Valley was enough to spark a transfer fight for his services after the culmination of the 2014/15 campaign, but the Reds have revealed today that they were successful in their attempts to convince him to move to Anfield.

Confirmed deal

The 18-year-old defender has put pen to paper on a long-term deal with the Merseyside outfit, claiming that he was ‘flattered’ to learn of interest from such a ‘massive club’.

He’ll now fight for a place in Brendan Rodgers’ first-team, though it’s likely he’ll have to be patient with regards to accruing opportunities in the senior squad.

Lots of activity

Gomez becomes Liverpool’s fourth signing of the summer, with Burnley’s Danny Ings, Bolton’s Adam Bogdan and Manchester City’s James Milner having already agreed to join Rodgers’ cause.

Fans will no doubt take heart from how active their club has been in the market prior to the transfer window evening opening, and it bodes good things for the future given the transition the team is facing.

The departure of Steven Gerrard to LA Galaxy was always going to cause a big stir at Liverpool, such was his influence at the club, and the most important thing for Rodgers to do now is move into a new era, possible one wherein his side are less reliant on the brilliance of one man.

Gomez’s addition might not guarantee the Reds a run at silverware, but it’s certainly a step in the right direction given the potential he’s lauded as having.
