Liverpool's busy summer is set to continue as they may look to pounce on uncertainty over Dries Mertens' future.

Liverpool have already strengthened an ever bustling squad with additions such as Danny Ings and James Milner this summer, and the Belgian international could become the next to commit his future to Anfield.

Mertens future

As relayed by the Daily Express Soren Lerby, Mertens' agent, revealed on Thursday that his client "knows what he wants" and added there will "meeting soon to decide the lads' (Mertens') future." Uncertainty over his next move could pave the way for the Reds to swoop in for what would an excellent signing.

"Dries is on holiday at the moment, I can’t say anything now, by next week we might know something," Lerby said.

“Mertens is mature for his age, he knows what he wants. We’re looking at the situation, we’ll have a meeting soon to decide the lad’s future.

“It’s true that Mertens has a contract with Napoli, but we’ll make our decision together with the club.”

It was a difficult season for both Napoli and Mertens last time around, with the latter making regular appearances from the bench despite being considered one of Napoli's stronger midfielders. The arrival of Maurizio Sarri, who is replacing Rafa Benitez on the San Paolo touchline, means this summer promises to be a period of transition for the Italian side.

Whether or not Mertens will be part of this transition in a positive manner though remains to be seen.

Strong interest

There is no doubt Mertens will be a wanted man should he decide his future lies elsewhere, and with Liverpool looking set to lose Raheem Sterling the 28 year-old would surely be a perfect replacement.

Of course, this is still very much based on pure speculation and Mertens could well be attracted to the lure of Champions League football from other clubs that might have the jump on Liverpool.
