Manchester United's hopes of signing Jerome Boateng this summer are hanging by a thread after it emerged the Bayern Munich defender's girlfriend Sherin Senler is reluctant to return to England four years after leaving local rivals Manchester City.
According to an exclusive by the Star on Sunday, the World Cup winning Germany international was being lined up by Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal for a £20 million move to Old Trafford in the forthcoming transfer window.
However, the veteran Dutch coach's plans have been dealt a blow following news of Boateng's partner wanting to remain in Germany next season, and not negotiate a big-money move back to the Premier League.
Bayern coach Pep Guardiola is thought to be open to the idea of the centre-back leaving the Allianz Arena, but the 26-year-old might dig his heels in to stay with the Bundesliga champions if that is going to be in the best interests of his young family.
During his time at the Etihad Stadium Boateng was often deployed out of position on the right side of defence, which caused further frustration and made his time in England's top-flight pretty unhappy.
Van Gaal plans to utilise the versatile star in the middle of his back four whilst also having him as a back-up option at full-back, although Manchester United are eager to recruit a specialist right-back this summer as well.
They just need to convince Sherin - mother of the player's two children - that a return to Manchester will be much more enjoyable than it was last time around, with Boateng seen as being an important part of the club's starting XI moving forward.
