It could be argued that with all the forward line talent that Manchester United have at their disposal they may not need another striker. They have Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, James Wilson, Angelo Henriquez and Javier Hernandez. Remember him? His loan spell at Real Madrid has ended and it doesn’t look like he will be going back to ply his trade at the Bernabeu any time soon, so Louis van Gaal could reintegrate the Mexican.
Hernandez is one of the best goal poachers in the game and had he been at Old Trafford last season, he may have been in those ‘poacher’ positions where Radamel Falcao was not, and got them those extra goals needed to gain automatic qualification to the Champions League or better.
Unfortunately, for him and many United supporters, he may be surplus to requirements. But what of their other forwards?
Van Persie is too injury prone (I think we all knew he would have one full season at the club before regularly succumbing to the treatment table didn't we) and his future at the club appears to be in 50/50 mode, while it seems Rooney and Wilson will remain, although don’t be surprised if the latter goes out on loan somewhere.
Henriquez is an exciting prospect and his record on loan is impressive, particularly last season at Dinamo Zagreb where he scored 20 goals in 25 games.
But it may take a good showing at Copa America with hosts Chile plus the usual demonstrations of ability and a decent attitude in day-to-day matters at Man United to stake any claim in Van Gaal’s first team.
So what do you United fans think of Hernandez and his future? Would you like him to stay at Old Trafford? Even if he is at the club next season, with others looking to be heading out the door, they will still need more personnel up front. So who would you like to come in?
Can Javier Hernandez still play at the top level for Manchester United?
