Villarreal president Fernando Roig has confirmed that the club have sold Luciano Vietto to Atlético Madrid, with Leo Baptistao coming the other way on loan.
"We've closed the sale of Vietto," Roig was quoted as saying by Sport. "We have sold him to Atlético Madrid."
Diego Simeone acted hastily in replacing the Juventus bound striker Mario Mandžukić by purchasing Vietto from Villarreal.
The Argentine striker, who enjoyed a fruitful first season in Spain with Villarreal, playing a total of 32 games but only starting 17 he still had a return of 12 goals.
Vietto had a €20 million release clause, a price Diego Simeone's side were more than happy to play. Simeone handed Vietto his debut at Racing Club in Argentina, so the transfer will see the pair link up once more.
Simeone praises Vietto
During an interview with TyC Sports, Diego Simeone made the following comments about Atlético bound Vietto.
“He's very smart tactically. He scores goals though he's not a natural-born scorer," he said. "I see him as very similar to David Villa at the beginning of his career, although without as much goal threat, but with the ability to work for the team, float between the lines and link up with the midfield and attack. We've got high hopes for him".
Simeone also gave his understandingly opinion about Tévez's decision to spurn the overtures from the 'Rojiblancos' seemingly in order to rejoin Boca Juniors: "I didn't speak to him, but Atlético did.
"He has Boca as an option. What's important is for a player of his class and stature to end his career where he wants because he deserves it, and he's very much loved by the Argentinian people".
