WWE caused quite a stir last week when it was reported that former Raw General Manager Brad Maddox appeared at a live show dressed as former WWE Champion CM Punk.
The Straight Edge Superstar left WWE in a cloud of controversy in January last year and has since been at the forefront of headlines concerning WWE.
He then made headlines in November last year when he finally broke his silence about his decision to leave WWE and have since been handed a $1M lawsuit from WWE doctor Chris Allman.
Whilst Punk has been outspoken about WWE on social media and in interviews ever since his departure, it seems WWE were trying to keep their distance and other than the odd remark or comment about Punk on live TV, WWE haven't fully mentioned the superstar as part of their product.
The latest reports suggest that this is all about to change because reports from the aforementioned live event state that Maddox not only turned up dressed very similar to the former superstar, but he also attempted to deliver a "pipebomb" style promo made famous by Punk, but the fans were not behind it.
“Maddox did not come out with CM Punk’s theme song, that was a rumor started on Twitter because people in my section near the stage thought it was Punk when he first came out for the pre-match speech about people forgetting who he was," read a report from Scott Fisher.
"Maddox seemed like he tweaked his in ring style some with more kicks and MMA style but he stalled some too, Swagger carried the match easily. No CM Punk theme song but the look had some people fooled, not all of us.”
WWE are well known for creating fake superstars and have seen the likes of Kane, Diesel and ever Sin Cara mimicked in recent years.
Moving on without them
Whilst WWE don't actually own the rights to the CM Punk name -Punk already owned the name on the Independent Scene before he was signed by WWE -here is nothing stopping the company from having a fake CM Punk character that has a name close to his so that fans can recognise the sarcasm.
Meanwhile, CM Punk's wife AJ Lee could be set to have her record as the longest reigning Divas Champion ended by the women who defeated her for the title last year, Nikki Bella.
The former Bella Twin has just become the third longest champion of all time behind Lee and Maryse and if she holds onto the championship until September she will end AJ Lee's record, which is perhaps WWE's main plan.
