Bastian Schweinsteiger could leave Bayern Munich and link up with former manager Louis van Gaal at Manchester United, according to reports.
It's believed Van Gaal is confident he can lure his former player away from the Allianz Arena, and transfer negotiator Ed Woodward has been told to make it happen.
The 30-year-old has so far refused to commit his future to Bayern, stating he will hold talks with the club later this summer and it seems like the Germany captain intends to fulfil his contract at the Allianz Arena if he can.
Germany legend Lothar Matthaus has recently offered up some advice for the German midfielder, as he believes a move to Old Trafford will do him good. Matthaus said it might be time for Schweinsteiger, who has spent his entire career at Bayern, to move on, as coach Pep Guardiola deployed Xabi Alonso in his preferred position regularly last season.
Matthaus wrote in his Sport Bild column: "Schweinsteiger has never been the fastest player in the world and, as he turns 31 soon, that will not improve in the future, but he is certainly intelligent enough and has the necessary vision to be the central link between defence and offensive midfield."
Schweinsteiger was a key figure under Van Gaal when the United boss was in charge at the Allianz Arena, and Matthaus commented on that factor as well, saying: "Schweinsteiger needs a coach that will play him according to his strengths and Van Gaal will. If there is an offer from Manchester, Bastian should give it serious consideration."
Regardless of whether Schweinsteiger remains at Bayern next season, the club have already announced plans to freshen up the squad given that so many of their key stars are now over 30 years old.
If Van Gaal is to get Schweinsteiger it will add invaluable experience to the team. A World Cup and Champions League winner will do wonders for the reconstruction that is currently taking place at United.
