Manchester United are considering a swap deal involving Angel di Maria and Bastian Schweinsteiger, according to German newspaper Bild.
Schweinsteiger has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks and would cost Louis van Gaal a relatively small amount due to his age (30) and contract situation.
The enforcing midfielder has just 12 months to run on his contract at the Allianz Arena and is reportedly tempted by the chance to reunite with Van Gaal at Old Trafford.
But instead of forking over the £7.5m Bayern Munich want for Schweinsteiger, Manchester United could instead offer their £59.7m flop Di Maria in a cash-plus-player exchange deal.
Of course, Bayern would have to hand over a significant sum of money as well as Schweinsteiger but Old Trafford officials have let their counterparts know that they would be open to such an offer.
Di Maria's value
It would be hard for Bayern Munich to gauge the value of Di Maria, who endured a dismal season at Manchester United, but is still widely considered one of the world's most creative wingers.
The Red Devils would be keen to get as much of the British record fee they paid to sign him from Real Madrid back, but few clubs would be able to afford such a fee as well as the player's incredible £280,000-a-week wages.
While Di Maria may have struggled in the Premier League under Van Gaal, he may find it easier to fit into Pep Guardiola's three-man attack, in a league where the defenders are usually more forgiving.
Bayern Munich are one of the world's richest clubs and are in need of a replacement for the ageing pair of Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben. Both are the wrong side of 30 and will struggle to play 50 games a season from now on.
Now could be the time for Bayern to invest heavily in a player who can fill the big boots of the aforementioned duo.
A fair deal
An offer of £40m plus Schweinsteiger would constitute a good deal for Manchester United, who could put the money towards a spectacular move for Gareth Bale.
They may struggle to get the Welshman from Real Madrid, but money would simply be no object for Ed Woodward, who seems determined to get his hands on another marquee signing this summer.
Schweinsteiger could be a similar signing to that of Edwin van der Saar, who arrived at Old Trafford at 32-years-old but reinvigorated his career, going on to become something of a cult hero with the club. He has the physicality for Premier League football and would surely find renewed motivation.
