Football News

The two sides met one another in the league a week ago, when Leeds ran out 32-20 victors. It marked the 2nd time the Rhinos have beaten the Hull side this season, winning earlier in the campaign, at the home of the Black and Whites, 12-43.

Not only this, but the last time that the two sides met in the Cup – the quarter final stage again in 2011 – Leeds, the away side, ran out 22-38 victors. Indeed, since 2000, the two sides have met 5 times in the Cup: Leeds have won 4 of the 5, in 2000, 2001, 2010, and 2011; Hull winning just the 1, but the most important, in the 2005 final.

To their credit, Hull have a rather underrated cup history. They have the record for amount of times runners up with 12 final losses; a statistic they share with the Rhinos.

The home side come into the game having won only two of their last five. A poor run of form is made worse by the fact that they have only won four games at home all season; the latest of these being the 40-14 drumming they put to Castleford in the previous round of the cup.

The Rhinos know they have the beating of Hull. Though the scoreline was close last week, with only 2 tries separating the sides, Leeds took the lead on 6 minutes and never relinquished it. With the victory, they put themselves back to the top of the league table.

The away side are also boosted by the news of the new signing Mitch Garbutt from Melbourne. He is only expected to make his debut next week at the earliest, but is a great player nonetheless.
Leeds had to make sacrifices to win last week.

They will be without McGuire, who is suspected to have broken his ankle, as well as Sutcliffe and Cuthbertson, who have knee and calf problems respectively. It could not happen to 3 worse players for Leeds, as the trio have arguably been the outstanding performers for the Cup champions.

Hull will be without Mark Minichiello, who also suffered a calf injury in the same game. They will also be missing half back Mark Sneyd, who has picked up a two-match ban for the tackle which caused McGuire’s injury 10 minutes from time last week.
