Joey Barton looks destined to make a return to the Premier League this season as another side who may have a relegation battle on their hands are looking to snap up the experienced midfielder on a free transfer.

Watford, who finished 2nd in the Championship this campaign are eager to bolster up their squad and will benefit from the experience Barton has to offer if a relegation dog fight is a threat to the side's season.

Barton was released by QPR last month along with six other key players as part of a mass clearout in an attempt to balance the books at Loftus Road however he may be back in the Premier League in familiar circumstances sooner than expected as Watford are keen to tie up a deal for the 32 year old.

Watford have been trying to keep up with fellow new boys Bournemouth in order to boost their chances of staying in the top flight and have already added to their defence by signing Juventus centre back Marco Motta on a free transfer.

Barton could potentially be back for his fourth spell at a Premier League side and will be looking to put the heartbreak of back to back Premier League relegations with the same club behind him and his experience in the situation would be vital to Watford's chances of staying up.

A deal is still in the pipeline and nothing has been agreed yet with both club and player still to agree terms however both will be looking to tie up a deal soon as the busy transfer period begins in just over one week's time.
