Arsenal do not want to sign Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal this summer contrary to recent reports.
This has been reported by The Sun, who claim that an Arsenal source has insisted that the north London outfit don't want to land the Chilean ace despite recent reports in Chile suggesting that the club were closing in on a £21 million move to secure his signature.
Vidal, who is recognised as one of the leading midfielders in European football, has been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates of late, but it now appears that the club will not press ahead with a move for the 28-year-old.
The Gunners, of course, have struggled in the centre of midfield at times over the last couple of years, but the emergence of Francis Coquelin certainly settled things down at the club last term.
The French youngster quickly established himself as a key man under Arsene Wenger, who also has the likes of Jack Wilshere, Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini at his disposal.
It appears, then, that he won't be looking to add Vidal to his side anytime soon, but is he making the right decision?
Well, at the end of the day, despite his options in the midfield department, Wenger may be making a mistake by overlooking Vidal.
It's not everyday a world-class midfielder becomes available, and £21million may well have been a risk worth taking. Having secured the services of Chelsea's Petr Cech, Wenger's clearly determined to improve the spine of his side, and capturing Vidal would have only done that further.
Ultimately, a Vidal-Coquelin partnership in the middle of the park would finally give Wenger's side an incredible balance, and would hand his attacking stars the license to roam around in the final third of the pitch.
All of a sudden, with those two protecting the back-four, Arsenal would look a completely different prospect: imagine Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey and Co. playing with even more freedom.
The Vidal signing may not happen, but it's crucial Arsenal continue to kick on next season, and Wenger must not stand still over the coming weeks. Cech is a wonderful start, but two more world-class additions are needed if the Gunners really are going to overhaul Chelsea and finally claim the Premier League title again.
