Wojciech Szczesny welcomes Petr Cech to Arsenal

Wojciech Szczesny sent a classy message to new team-mate Petr Cech moments after it was officially announced that the Chelsea legend has signed for Arsenal.

The Poland international’s hopes of re-establishing himself as the Gunners first-choice goalkeeper have been dealt a significant blow following the 33-year-old’s arrival, but he still took the time to pay tribute to Arsene Wenger’s latest acquisition.

Posting on his official Facebook page Szczesny welcomed the capture of Cech, saying that he’s delighted with the opportunity to learn from one of the best custodians in world football.

Cech is expected to be installed as Arsenal’s new No.1 after opting to leave the reigning Premier League champions in search of more regular football, having lost his place in the Blues’ starting XI to Thibaut Courtois.

Jose Mourinho was desperate for the Czech Republic international to remain at Stamford Bridge and definitely did not want the veteran to join one of Chelsea’s direct title rivals.

However, out of respect for everything that Cech has given to the club over the past 11 years, Russian owner Roman Abramovich overruled the Portuguese tactician and granted the player his wish to stay in England and join any club of his choosing.

The deal must be regarded as a real transfer coup for Wenger, particularly as Arsenal paid just £10.9 million for his services, offering him a four-year contract which will take him to his 37th birthday.

The goalkeeper department has been a problematic position for the Gunners for many years, but the signing of Cech should make them genuine contenders for the Premier League in 2015/16.

Only last week Chelsea captain John Terry claimed that the former Rennes stopper is worth 12-15 points per season, which, if true, will help Arsenal close the gap on Mourinho’s men significantly next term.

As for Szczesny, many supporters might’ve begun to question whether he has any future in north London, but judging by his latest social media post he’s planning to stay and fight for his place and bide his time at the club.
