Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin is now wanted by Manchester United, according to the most recent reports.
The interest in the French international comes despite the fact he has been linked on several occasions with a move to north London and Arsenal.
Schneiderlin is an excellent player and really stood out last season for the Saints, thus making it almost inevitable that he will move to a top four club this summer. Arguably he is best suited for a role with the Gunners or United.
Southampton are currently in contract negotiations with Schneiderlin but it would appear that the Frenchman wants to move to a bigger club. One certainty is that he will not be allowed to leave for anything less than £25million, though that isn't likely to deter either of his main suitors.
With regards to Arsenal's interest, manager Arsene Wenger may have less of a need for the talented midfielder as he now has in his ranks several key midfielders.
Francis Coquelin, who broke into the Gunners side in tremendous fashion last season, is in particular now a vital part of Wenger's side. He managed to hold down a starting place in the defensive midfield role and worked extremely well with Santi Cazorla alongside him.
United need greater?
Therefore arguably Arsenal do not need Schneiderlin. What could he add to the squad that the Gunners do not already possess? The embarrassment of riches Wenger has at his disposal in midfield is ridiculous when one considers they did not come close to winning the Premier League last season.
United on the other hand could most certainly benefit from the signing of Schneiderlin. Louis van Gaal has talented midfielders in his squad but none with the same attributes which the Southampton man can bring to the table.
With the most experienced midfielder at Old Trafford being Michael Carrick, now 33, it would seem that the centre of midfield is a crucial component that the Red Devils must strengthen if they want to challenge for league honours once more.
Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly also expressed an interest in signing the Frenchman, though Schneiderlin has been quoted as saying he will only leave the Saints to play Champions League football, something Spurs cannot offer this summer.
What is obvious if nothing else is that Schneiderlin is almost certainly leaving Southampton. The Saints fans will be sad to see him leave as he grew and developed at the Saints, but as the need for United to land someone with his traits becomes ever more pertinent, it looks a foregone conclusion an acceptable bid will be tabled soon.
