Good morning Arsenal fans, let us extend a very warm welcome to you on the eve of a day many football followers will deem bigger than Christmas.
That’s right, midnight tonight will mark the opening of the summer transfer window and the beginning of weeks of incredible rumours and downright ridiculous claims. The hard part is keeping track of what is right and what is pure baloney.
As Arsenal are a big club looking to strengthen it can be assumed that they will be actively linked with plenty of Europe’s finest talents. Here we’ve kick off the bidding early with the last few rumours to be found before TO-day - yes, we just dubbed it that.
Carvalho over Vidal
Arsenal supporters might have been a tad surprised to see the confirmation that the Gunners wouldn’t be trying to sign Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal this summer, but don’t worry, it appears Arsene Wenger has a ploy up his sleeve.
The latest reports indicate that the only reason the Frenchman isn’t interested in landing Vidal is because he has a preference for Sporting Lisbon hot-shot William Carvalho, long-linked of course with a Premier League move.
Carvalho might not have the same reputation as Vidal but he’s a better ball-winner, which is perhaps what Arsenal need if they’re to provide a stern challenge to the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea next year.
In any case word that Wenger is trying to land the Portuguese midfielder is essentially a guarantee that he’s looking for someone to compete with, or play alongside, Francis Coquelin. Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin is another viable option given his experience in the Premier League, though no official bid for him has been made of yet.
Szczesny and Cech
Elsewhere the greetings for Arsenal new-boy Petr Cech have come thick and fast, with a number of the Gunners’ key players offering their welcomes. One message of note came from Wojciech Szczesny, who will seemingly complete for a place with Cech next season.
The Pole said he was delighted to have the chance to learn from one of the best goalkeepers in the world, but might well change his amicable tune if he’s consigned to the bench as the veteran stopper takes his place at the Emirates Stadium.
Last but not least we’ve got the latest on Leicester City ace Jeffrey Schlupp, who rumour has it is wanted by Arsenal.
Contrary to general assumption it’s thought he could sign a new contract with the Foxes. We’ll have more on that as it comes in.
