Chelsea are confident of wrapping up a deal for Stoke City’s Asmir Begovic despite the fact they saw an opening bid of around £6million rejected by the Potters yesterday.
In an immediate attempt to find an ideal replacement for Petr Cech, who of course officially joined Arsenal at the beginning of this week, Jose Mourinho put forward a proposal Stoke for their Bosnian stopper Begovic.
However, Mark Hughes and the powers that be at the Britannia Stadium are said to value the ‘keeper at closer to £10m and so are holding out for an improved offer in the hope that the Blues will oblige.
According to the Daily Mail a deal should be clinched soon so long as Chelsea offer cash plus a player in return, though which player that might be remains open to interpretation.
Given Stoke’s standing in the Premier League and the strength of Mourinho’s squad it’s not likely to be a first-team regular, although there are plenty of fringe players at the west London club who could be of use to Hughes.
Quick deal necessary
Indeed the Blues are believed to be keen to land Begovic sooner rather than later, and with Manchester United seemingly interested as the long-winded saga concerning David de Gea plays out Mourinho will want to do business with Stoke quickly.
His longing for Begovic is drawn from a belief that the 28-year-old’s arrival wouldn’t necessarily threaten Thibaut Courtois to the point of disgruntling him, but at the same time his proven Premier League pedigree means he would be a worthy adversary for the number one spot at Stamford Bridge and a reliable backup if he can’t succeed where Cech failed and force Courtois out of his dominant position.
As a result the idea of offering cash plus a player is surely one that would appeal to Mourinho, especially since he has sanctioned loan spells for so many players over the past two seasons.
The likes of John Obi Mikel and Oscar have been linked with moves away of late though are likely too high-profile for Stoke, but there are others who could be ideal.
One such player is Victor Moses, who spent last term on loan at the Britannia and doesn’t look to have a future at Chelsea. The 24-year-old is wanted by Spurs and could command an adequate fee, though if Mourinho believes he’s integral to getting Begovic he will surely act on it.
