Tottenham Hotspur are poised to beat Southampton and secure the signing of Toby Alderweireld, according to reports.
The Evening Standard claims Mauricio Pochettino is in the driving seat to land the Dutch international defender, with the 26-year-old favouring a move to White Hart Lane over a return to St Mary's.
The paper's report goes on to claim that Atletico Madrid want a fee in the region of £14million for the player, who impressed during his loan spell with the Saints last season despite suffering a couple of injuries.
Ronald Koeman had been hoping to bring the player back to Southampton on a permanent deal this summer, and was quoted as recently as yesterday saying he was hopeful that another deal could be struck between the two parties.
"The player likes to stay, we like to keep the player but it's a little difficulty at the moment with Atletico Madrid, I have a good hope he will stay for Southampton," he said.
However, Spurs are also looking to strengthen in the centre-back position as well and the addition of Alderweireld would provide competition for the likes of Younes Kaboul, Jan Vertonghen and Vlad Chiriches.
He would also add to the Belgian contingent in north London alongside Vertonghen, Moussa Dembele and Nacer Chadli, although it remains to be seen if striker Christian Benteke will be joining them at White Hart Lane as well this summer.
Emmanuel Adebayor is now being mooted as a possible makeweight in any possible deal, but there is still plenty to be done if that transfer is also to go through before the start of the new season.
