Sergio Ramos is, and has been for a long time, one of the best centre-backs in Europe. Even though he started as a right back, he has made the central defensive position his own over the past few years at Real Madrid.
With Madrid, Ramos has won every trophy possible. However, he cannot win the Premier League while still at the Santiago Bernabeu. But he can with Manchester United.
United have struggled in the defensive department ever since Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic left them high and dry at the back. I think that if they manage to secure Ramos and keep Marcos Rojo, they could have an extremely solid back four next season.

But, although it would solve a lot of their problems, it wouldn't solve them all. They need to develop an extra strong spine and will need to buy big to do so. They are reportedly close to signing Morgan Schneiderlin from Southampton so there is a massive buy right there.
That solves the central midfield problem because Ander Herrera isn't cut out to play that holding role and Marouane Fellaini isn't good enough. This stands them in good stead regarding midfield. They also need an extra striker, a 20 goal a season man. They have been linked with Harry Kane recently and he would be an exciting addition.

They will probably have to replace their goalkeeper David de Gea as he looks to be on his way to Madrid. Hugo Lloris would be an ideal replacement there I think. Imagine that for a spine, Lloris in goal, Ramos and Rojo and center back, Schneiderlin and Mata in midfield, Kane and Rooney up top. What a team. If that happens then Chelsea can wave the title goodbye.
That team should be unstoppable in my opinion. They are players who have proved they can do it at the top level of the game so they shouldn't need much time to settle.
Louis van Gaal has had his season to settle in at the club now and the time to deliver for the Dutchman has arrived. He needs to start to bring trophies or at least attractive football back to Man United, otherwise the fans may turn.
I think this season he will do exactly that, and Manchester United have a great chance of winning the league, as long as they buy well.
Your move, Mr Van Gaal...
