Atletico Madrid midfielder Arda Turan hopes to reach an agreement with European champions Barcelona on Friday.
This is according to Barcelona-based newspaper Mundo Deportivo, who understand Arda has told people in his native Turkey that the Camp Nou is his preferred destination.
However the report is at odds with the Daily Mail’s story on Tuesday, which claimed the industrious winger had his heart set on a move to Chelsea, in order to work under Jose Mourinho.
It was reported last week, again by Mundo Deportivo, that Barcelona would sign Arda if Josep María Bartomeu is re-elected as the club’s president later this summer.
The Turkey international has a £29 million release clause in his contract and is keen to leave the Vicente Calderon after four successful years with the 2013-14 La Liga champions.
Loan deal possible
Arda is set to announce his decision by the end of the week, but Mundo Deportivo are convinced he wants to play for Luis Enrique’s treble-winning side.
With Barcelona unable to register new signings until January, Arda could spend the first half of next season on loan with his former employers Galatasaray. The other option, if regulations deem it acceptable, is for the Turk to spend the first few months of his Barcelona career playing for the club’s ‘B’ team in order to keep him match fit until the New Year.
Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba looked set to face a similar dilemma; however, Spanish newspaper Sport have reported this afternoon that the French midfielder will arrive at the Camp Nou in the summer of 2016 instead.
Arda, on the other hand, wants a transfer finalised this summer. He has grown weary of playing for Atletico, where Diego Simeone expects 100 per cent effort from each and every one his players for 90 minutes and no letup.
Arda Turan should join Chelsea
As well as Chelsea, Manchester United have also been linked with the classy winger - but which club would suit him most?
Given that his best position is on the right wing, it’s probably in Arda’s best interests to steer clear of Old Trafford, where Memphis Depay will be plying his trade next season.
There is even more competition for first-team places at the Camp Nou, while nobody in world football is breaking up the successful triumvirate comprised of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez.
Chelsea could be Arda’s best bet given neither Willian nor Juan Cuadrado have nailed down the right-wing position. There’s even been talk this week that the latter could leave Stamford Bridge, a mere matter of months after joining the Blues in a £27 million deal from Fiorentina.
