Manchester United's hopes of signing Lazio midfielder Lucas Biglia are fading following reports that the Serie 'A' club are ready to hand the Argentinian a bumper new contract at Stadio Olimpico.
According to talkSPORT, Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal is keen to bring the 29-year-old to Old Trafford as he looks to add another defensive midfielder to his ranks ahead of the 2015/16 campaign.
With Michael Carrick entering the latter stages of his career at the Theatre of Dreams the veteran Dutch tactician is already looking to the future, and sees the South American as a useful addition to his squad.

Biglia is no spring chicken himself, but the former Anderlecht star at least has a few more years left in the tank playing at the top level. And, as a late bloomer who only started gaining widespread recognition across Europe for his uncompromising style of play a couple of seasons ago, he'll aspire to play well into his mid 30s.
He only made his debut for the Argentina national team in 2011 but has gone on to earn 27 caps for his country, starring at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil as well as this summer's Copa America tournament in Chile where he'll be hoping to help Gerardo Martino's side overcome the host nation in Saturday's final.
Real Madrid are rumoured to have been sniffing around Biglia as well with a report last week suggesting the Spanish giants had made a £15 million bid for the deep-lying playmaker.
However, according to reports in Italy it will take an additional £5 million to make Lazio seriously consider cashing in on a player that made 30 appearances in the Eternal City last season and continues to play an important role in Stefano Pioli's side.
It remains to be seen whether or not Manchester United are willing to spend that much on Biglia, particularly when there are other much younger targets they've been linked with for a similar price.
