Sergio Ramos is one of the best in the world, says Paul Clement

Published 3 Comments

Former-Real Madrid coach Paul Clement believes Manchester United could massively benefit from having a player like Sergio Ramos.

Formerly assistant to Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid, Clement joined Championship side Derby County this summer as first team manager and having worked at the Bernabeu for two years he's seen Old Trafford transfer target Ramos up close.

The Spaniard has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United this summer, as the Premier League club have seemingly tied any deal for goalkeeper David De Gea to Ramos coming the other way.

And Clement believes whoever ends up with Ramos at the end of the transfer window will 'massively benefit' from having one of the game's elite defenders.

"He is a wonderful player, one of the best I have ever worked with," Clement told Sky Sports as reported by the Daily Mirror.

"[He has] so many qualities, [he is] a fantastic footballer, leader, competitor, athlete, a fantastic guy.

"He is one of the best centre-halves in the world and I've worked with some good ones like John Terry, Thiago Silva at PSG, good ones in Pepe and Raphael Varane but Ramos is up there with the best I've worked with.

"Whether at Real Madrid or United, either club are going to massively benefit. Wherever he is, it's going to be a massive plus for that club."

Transfer saga

The Ramos-De Gea transfer saga looks set to be one that will drag all through the transfer window - Manchester United reportedly have had a £29m offer for Ramos knocked back already.

Manchester United are playing a dangerous game with De Gea out of contract next summer, but if they can get Ramos in that will represent a fantastic bit of business, especially with Victor Valdes lined up and ready to go to replace De Gea.

Ramos, 29, would be a huge investment purely for short-term benefit but it's the sort of signing that propels a club like United from top four candidates to perennial title challengers again.

What do you think Manchester United fans - will you end up with Ramos come the close of the transfer window?
