Schneirderlin has long been expected to leave Southampton during this summer transfer window and Manchester United have emerged as the leading contenders to sign him, with some reports suggesting the France international was set to undergo a medical with the club.
However, he remains hopeful that Arsenal will formalise their interest. This is according to Duncan Castles in the Sunday Times, who appears to have the inside track on the story.

Schneiderlin, it is said, would rather play for Arsene Wenger as he feels Arsenal’s style of football would better suit his strongest attributes. Manchester United are a ‘clear second-choice’ for the player, Castles reports.
This is not to say the 25-year-old would not join Manchester United, but it would still be something of a kick in the teeth for Louis van Gaal. Arsenal, though, have yet to bid so Old Trafford still seems to be Schneiderlin’s most likely destination.
Arsenal would have surely have moved for Schneiderlin already were it not for the unexpected emergence of Francis Coquelin last season, who appears to have solved Wenger’s defensive midfield issues.
Would Wenger be interested in spending £24 million to reinforce a position that is no longer deemed a necessity? It would seem not, as was also indicated by his willingness to sit back as Geoffrey Kondogbia moved from Monaco to Inter.
Arsenal have the money to spend these days but Wenger has always been rather measured in the market and his loyalty to Coquelin, who came through the club’s system, could well put paid to the acquisition of any player possessing similar attributes.
