Manchester United agree to sell Angelo Henriquez

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has agreed to sell Chilean striker Angelo Henriquez this summer.

The 21-year-old is poised to complete a permanent move to Dinamo Zagreb, where he scored 20 goals in 25 league appearances while on loan with the Croatian champions last season, bringing an end to his three-year spell with the Red Devils in the process.

This is according to the Manchester Evening News, who understand the talented South American striker has failed to convince Van Gaal despite his eye-catching exploits at the Stadion Maksimir last term.

United signed Henriquez for an undisclosed fee in September 2012 after he burst onto the scene with Universidad de Chile.

Having already made his international debut for Chile’s senior side, United knew this was a player with bags of potential who could, with the right coaching, develop into a potential superstar.

Failure to shine in England and Spain

But for whatever reason it failed to happen for Henriquez in England. The striker was loaned to Wigan Athletic for the second half of the 2012-13 campaign but made just four Premier League appearances, scoring one goal.

Henriquez did, however, play four times in the FA Cup that season and ended the campaign with a winners’ medal following Wigan’s shock victory over Manchester City in the final.

The Chilean was sent on loan to Real Zaragoza following the appointment of David Moyes in the summer of 2013, but failed to make the impact he would have hoped for.

Six goals in 25 La Liga appearances was a disappointing return for a player with so much ability, although he still managed to showcase his credentials on several occasions in the Spanish top flight.

United fans disappointed by decision

Van Gaal also decided it was in the best interests of both the player and Manchester United for Henriquez to spend the 2014-15 campaign out on loan.

Dinamo Zagreb liked what they saw and duly snapped him up on a season-long loan deal - an inspired decision that helped them win their domestic league title last term.

Henriquez’s impressive displays earned him a call-up to Chile’s squad for the Copa America, and he appeared as a substitute in the final against Argentina on Saturday night as the tournament hosts won the showpiece international tournament for the first time in their history.

Some United fans have voiced their disappointment that Van Gaal has made the decision to sell Henriquez with posts on social media - and it’s easy to understand their frustration with the Red Devils currently short on talented strikers.
